High school
music credits

Earn Ontario high school music credits through your music lessons at Merriam. The credits count toward your Ontario Secondary School Diploma and go on your transcript like any other course.

How it works

Your lessons
count

The music courses build on the private lessons you already take with us, so much of the work happens in your lesson and your practice.

01

Your weekly lesson

A weekly 30 or 60-minute private lesson at Merriam counts toward the 110 hours of study the Ministry of Education requires for a credit.

02

A weekly online class

Each course adds a weekly online group class with an approved Merriam teacher, plus assignments. Grade 9 meets for 60 minutes; Grades 11 and 12 meet for 2 hours.

03

Two terms a year

Term 1 runs from September to late January and Term 2 from February to June. Each term earns one credit.

04

On your transcript

We let your home school know which course you’re taking, then send the final report card. The credit goes on your Ontario Student Transcript.

Good to know

Before you
sign up

Starting in Grade 8

Grade 8 students can apply for a Reach Ahead credit. It needs an application, a written commitment from a parent and a letter of recommendation from the elementary school principal.

Keeping your teacher

Most students keep their private teacher. The weekly online class is taught by a Merriam teacher approved and trained for the high school program.

It counts as your arts credit

These are full Ontario credits that can meet the compulsory arts requirement. RCM external credits are different and can’t.

Prerequisites from your home school

A prerequisite taken at a registered high school counts, as long as the course code matches.

No credit for past lessons or Keyfest exams

Credits can’t be given for lessons already taken or for Keyfest exams. Each course has its own assignments and group class.

Fees

Fees depend on the grade, whether you already study at Merriam and how many years you’ve been with us. Ask the High School team for pricing.
